From an Editorial at New York Times.com: "Mr. Obama’s Party "
"Government, Mr. Obama argued, cannot solve all of the country’s problems. But he said it has basic responsibilities to do what individual Americans cannot do themselves — “protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology.”
Ok, so I don't have to lock my doors at night, because it is a "basic responsibility" of government to protect me.
I need only feed, cloth, clean, and shelter children, because it is the "basic responsibility" of government to provide every child with a decent education.
I don't need to worry or wonder about the water I drink or the toys children play with, because it is the "basic responsibility" of government to keep our water clean & toys safe.
No need to invest in new schools, government will take care of that too.
Don't worry about new roads, government will build those.
New science & technology - also the "basic responsibility" of government.
Let me see... what's left - Thanks Mr. Obama! I still have to unclog my own toilet & wipe my own butt. Hey, this is really great.

If you had one of those newfangled Japanese bidet-o-matic toilets, you wouldn't have to wipe, either. Maybe we could lobby Washington to provide those as a Constitutional right to hands-free hygiene.
